Bernice Sorge

And the song goes on, beautiful." Rilke

Bernice Lutfie Sorge is a nature printer, creating original prints using weeds and leaves as the matrix for her printing plates. Recently Sorge extended her work to include photosilkscreened images that superimpose their presence onto the nature pri...nts. Here the artist purposely creates pentimento as a metaphor for a family history lost through emigration. The images from the small black and white family photos are artifacts without identification and appear among the leaves as faint traces from an unknown past.

The artist plays with fragments of leaves as potential frames for the re-construction of a family tree. Through this process she terms "photo-analysis" the artist creates 'food for thought', a metaphor for photosynthesis, whereby the leaf creates food for the tree. By attempting to delicately balance the photos among the leaves the artist plays with personal history.

This 'potentia', or moment of interface where cause and effect lose their hold is the country of the artist and the membrane through which all personal histories potentially meet.
Bernice Sorge, 2002
